Key Purpose Statement

  • Adding to the Crawford ethos of a nurturing, supportive, educational environment. Assisting the teacher at Grade appropriate level. To contribute to the school’s events and socials as and when requested.

Principal Accountabilities

Administration:

  • Knowledge of the Scope and Sequence
  • Prep and Planning on file
  • Assessments – keep own record to add to progress reports
  • Keeping stock of classroom toys and educational equipment

Assisting Teaching and Learning

Classroom Management:

  • Get to know your teacher mentors and their teaching techniques
  • Ask questions and assist when and wherever possible
  • Control and discipline: remind pupils of the classroom agreement; develop student agency to empower students; controlling the children and being mindful of their safety at all times
  • Assist with and reinforce activities after input and guidance from the teacher as to what is expected and acceptable
  • Interns are encouraged to adhere to the duties suggested in the attached document
  • As a qualified teacher you may be required to teach some of the lessons on your own and you may be required to stand in for other teachers who are absent
  • Guidance and feedback from the class teacher on all lessons is imperative and should be recorded and filed
  • Lessons may at times be visited and appraised by someone from the management team
  • Classrooms are neat, tidy
  • Be in the classroom on time

Professional Development and Conduct:

  • Crawfordology – what does it mean
  • Have knowledge of the Crawford Academic Pillars
  • Have an understanding of the IB and be willing to learn and adapt
  • Attend Grade Prep and Planning meetings
  • Attend courses and workshops promoted by the school
  • The intern may be required to undergo some training to enable them to use equipment and toys that are unfamiliar. This training may be done during or after school hours
  • Attend ECD meetings when requested to do so
  • Interns to abide by the terms and conditions set out in the Employment Contract

Relationship Building:

  • Relationships should be kept meaningful and professional at all times
  • Build relationships with your pupils’ parents/guardians
  • Build relationships with the teachers, schools’ management, shareholders and stakeholders
  • A healthy working relationship with colleagues creates a happy working environment - be a team player

Pastoral Care:

  • Show concern and care for the personal and social well- being of all pupils
  • General non-academic communication with parents/guardians
  • Academic conversations to be held in partnership with the teacher – always
  • Aiding and assisting the class teacher during school hours wherever and whenever possible
  • Working with and playing with the children
  • Assist with classroom control
  • Be involved with the toilet routine of the children
  • Changing if necessary
  • Applying sun block cream to the children’s faces and ensuring that they have their sun hats on at all times when outside
  • Assist the children at break time or at any time that they eat their snacks
  • Setting up of outside time toys, games and equipment as planned
  • General tidying up, in the classroom, storeroom and on the playground

Special Projects:

  • Pro-Ed sport is a compulsory attendance activity. Interns are to be involved and to help with taking to and from activities
  • Additional portfolios may be requested and will be discussed accordingly
  • Interns may be required to attend certain school functions after hours or on Saturdays

Required Education and Experience:

  • Grade 12
  • Proficiency in English
  • Recognised academic teaching qualification
