To become a charity fundraiser you'll need tohave excellent communications skills and the enthusiasm to drum upsupport for our organisation
As a charity fundraiser, yourremit is to increase the contributions of individuals and groups toa charity by building relationships and exploring new fundraisingopportunities from various sources.
You'll need to be ableto network, since success in the role depends heavily on being ableto forge positive relationships with supporters. Another area ofyour role will be to raise awareness of the charity's work, aimsand goals.
Types of charity fundraiser

Your fundraising title will normally be categorizedaccording to the types of donors you focus on:

• Corporate fundraisers raisemoney from businesses in various ways, from organizing payrollgiving to agreeing sponsorship of major events. This may suitsomeone with a good understanding ofbusiness.
• Trust and statutoryfundraisers bid for trust and grant money. This mayappeal more to people who enjoy research and preparingproposals.
• Communityfundraisers are the main point of contact for mostmainstream fundraising involving members of the public. Communityfundraising will suit those who can work with people from all walksof life and are keen to get involved in a variety of fundraisingactivities.
• Major donorfundraisers focus on developing relationships with keysupporters who can donate high-value gifts. Often this is a role towhich experienced fundraisersprogress.
• Legacy fundraisersencourage supporters to consider leaving a gift to the charity intheir will. This type of fundraising may suit people with aninterest in law or accountancy.

Inlarger charities you'll usually specialist in one particular areaof donation. In smaller charities, you may cover several types offundraising.

Responsibilities

As a charity fundraiser, you'll need to:

• motivate and facilitate supporters to maximizethe funds they raise
• inspire new supporters toraise money, while maintaining and developing relationships withexisting supporters
• organised traditionalactivities, such as sponsored outdoor events and house-to-housecollections of donated goods and money
• developnew and imaginative fundraising activities, many of which involveorganizing events
• raise awareness of thecharity and its work at local and national levels, e.g. givingtalks to groups or seeking photo opportunities with themedia
• develop and coordinate web-basedfundraising, online auctions and merchandisesales
• increase funds by researching andtargeting charitable trusts whose criteria match the charity's aimsand activities
• develop and implement a strategyfor individual and corporate supporter recruitment anddevelopment
• recruit, organised and managevolunteers to carry out various functions within thecharity
• oversee corporate fundraising,including employee giving and matched giving fromemployers
• manage and update databases to recorddonor contact and preference information
• writeapplications and mail-shots, using direct mailing to reach a rangeof potential and current donors
• make riskanalyses and balancing time-cost ratios to focus effort on thefundraising activities that are most appropriate and will have thehighest chance ofsuccess.

Workinghours

You'll generally work 35hours per week but the exact number will depend on Our ExecutiveDirector. Our Project may offer flexible working. Availability towork out of hours is often required, e.g. to attend evening orweekend events andmeetings.

• Fundraisers are increasinglybased at home with offices, which may be some distance away. You'llbe expected to be at our meeting supporters for a significantportion of your time.
