Job Purpose


The Lead, Electronics & Software Engineering, is a highly specialized and technical role at KAUST that oversees all electrical engineering, electronics, embedded systems and mechatronics projects, as well as ensuring stringent safety standards.

The position holder will work to keep electrical design and electronic fabrication capabilities at KAUST relevant and technologically state-of-the-art. This is a senior position in a client-centric service organization.

The position holder is expected to train and mentor students, researchers, staff and interested community members in electronic and software techniques and theory.

He/She is also expected to support the Human Capital agenda of the 2030 Vision by creating and maintaining a nationally recognized KAUST Mechatronics Institute and apprenticeship program.


Major Accountabilities


The Lead, Electronics & Software Engineering, is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of the Electronics Fabrication Lab (EFL) and overseeing all embedded systems and mechatronics projects.

This includes ensuring the highest levels of safety, efficient workflow management, equipment maintenance, tools and materials procurement and management.

He/She will be highly effective at collaborating with customers and colleagues in completing large projects involving electronics and software. This includes planning, designing, preparing, managing and completing much of the work him/herself in a timely manner.


Ensure the members operating under his/her direction maintain mission-relevant and advanced hard and soft skillsets; he/she will understand their career aspirations and will provide them with mission-relevant professional development opportunities.

He/She will work to maintain high levels of team camaraderie and effective teamwork.


Being a senior member of the team, He/She will be a mentor to junior staff, and will work closely with the Foreman and Supervisor in ensuring the PCL facilities remain industrially relevant environments for colleagues and customers to safely perform their fabrication, prototyping and development work.


He/She will perform other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee's knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of his/her position necessary for completing the team's mission.


Service to the community and nation The Lead, Electronics & Software Engineering will create and maintain a nationally recognized KAUST Mechatronics Institute and apprenticeship program for Saudi nationals.

Successful graduates of the program will have demonstrated an advanced ability to design and complete mechatronic projects, and exhibit excellent customer experience skills.

Competencies


The Lead, Electronics & Software Engineering, is an expert in the design, fabrication and characterization of PCBs and PCBAs, component and system level engineering, and control systems, demonstrating expert use of most tools and equipment necessary for completing this work.

Must be an effective and positive leader able to effectively manage the performance and development of a team of skilled professionals to achieve the team objectives'.

Must be able to effectively manage facility and tool maintenance, as well as materials procurement and inventory.

Safety and Operations


The Lead, Electronics & Software Engineering, will ensure workplace safety at all times, diligently complying with international industry safety standards, KAUST HSE policies, and other relevant regulations, procedures and guidelines.

He/She will report and manage machine issues or non-compliances that compromise work quality and/or safety.

Teamwork and client-centricity
The position holder will demonstrate due diligence in creating an atmosphere of effective teamwork and team camaraderie.

He/She will work closely with students, researchers, PIs, staff and colleagues using effective communication techniques when planning projects and preparing jobs.


Service to the community and nation


The Lead, Electronics & Software Engineering will have thorough knowledge and practice in the use of contemporary teaching techniques and will be an effective trainer and mentor to apprentices, students, researchers, staff and interested community members in electrical engineering and fabrication techniques with focus on safety.


Qualifications:

Essential qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or similar field.

Preferable qualifications
Instructor certification or industry recognized equivalent.
