Job Purpose

Major Accountabilities

  • Ensure efficient daily operations of BCL covering data management and integrity throughout the entire data lifecycle, processing and analysis, computational resources management, and support for the BCL labs on data infrastructure with mínimal supervision.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements of automated pipelines, data processing workflows, quality control/quality assurance protocols and analysis tools to maximize productivity and efficiency.
  • Significantly contribute to the advancements of the lab instrumentation and/or analytical methodologies.
  • Provide guidance and contribute to experimental design independently or in collaboration with other scientists.
  • Design and perform bioinformatics data analysis in selected projects to address complex scientific problems.
  • Provide expert advice to users and PIs regarding advanced data analysis methods.
  • Lead the identification, assessment, development, optimization and implementation of novel methodologies/tools to address advanced scientific problems. Stay ahead of the field, and create and implement changes in a persistent and timely manner.
  • Plan and oversee development of capabilities in his/her functional areas. Proactively identify areas for improvements and provide solutions.
  • Develop resources of the team in collaboration with the lab director and other team leads.
  • Act as a role model. Foster a positive work environment. Provide training and coaching to junior staff.
  • Ensure clear communication and alignment of the team to achieve organizational goals.
  • Contribute to an effective and efficient asset management strategy.
  • Plan, write and oversee development of SOPs, WIs, and other documentation. Show excellence in documentation practice.
  • Perform other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee's knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of his/her position.
**Person Requirements
Competencies

  • Excellent leadership and peoplemanaging skills.
  • Highly specialized with extensive experience as data scientist in the field of bioinformatics and computational biology.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading projects on building bioinformatics capabilities (data analysis and/or software infrastructure) involving stakeholders in diverse background and areas.
  • Solid understanding and expertise in genomics technologies, including but not limited to Illumina, 10X, PacBio and Oxford Nanopore Technologies. Experience in proteomics is a plus.
  • Proficiency in shell, Python and/or R. Familiarity with workflow management software such as Nextflow and Snakemake, as well as containerization tools including Docker and Singularity. Experience in web development and database management is a plus.
  • Substantial working experience in an HPC Unix/Linux environment.
  • Full fluency in genomics analysis toolkits (e.g. alignment, annotation, variant calling, genome assembly, differential expression, etc).
  • Strong scientific and technical problemsolving skills and independent thinking.
  • Track record of highquality publications in scientific journals.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team and make operational decisions independently with mínimal supervision.
  • Be reliable and responsible. Take ownership of tasks to ensure full completion to required standard with mínimal errors and supervision.
  • Is meticulous, dynamic and resilient, with proactive personality and positive, growth mindset (scientific curiosity and desire to better oneself). Always look for improvements.
  • Good organizational skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excel in documentation.
  • Ability to work in a team and collaborate with others (open and sharing). Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.

Qualifications:

PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science or similar field.

Experience

At least 5 years of experience with analyzing large and complex sequencing and related biological data.

Demonstrated experience and knowledge in NGS and long-read sequencing technologies essential. Experience in multi-omics analysis preferred.

Experienced and comfortable working with different cultures in an international and multi-disciplinary environment essential.
