About J-PAL Africa

J-PAL is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. J-PAL is based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Africa office is based at the University of Cape Town (UCT) with a satellite office in Johannesburg. J-PAL is a dynamic team of motivated individuals who work with a global network of academic development economists.

About the opportunity

J-PAL Africa invites you to apply for an internship in our research, policy and communications teams. Internships are paid, and positions can be structured as either part- or full-time. The location of each internship is included in the descriptions below.

Girls Education & Empowerment Policy Internship

The Girls' Education and Empowerment Portfolio aims to improve the lives of adolescent girls by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Our team supports governments in the design of policies and programmes targeted at adolescent girls through the careful application of global evidence to local contexts throughout West Africa. The successful candidate will support scoping opportunities for evidence use and generation in the gender-equity space, map potential partnerships and drive forward our agenda by crafting communications content and engagement strategies for various partners. This internship is remote or in-person and has a flexible start date of June/July. Individuals from anywhere in Africa are eligible to apply.


DigiFI Policy Internship

J-PAL Africa hosts a research initiative on digital identity and payments in Africa, DigiFI. Our team of policy staff and postdoctoral fellows build partnerships with governments and other stakeholders to understand their priorities, and fund research projects all across the continent. We are looking for an excellent communicator and organiser to support our continued outreach efforts. The successful candidate would be expected to support the request for proposals process to facilitate decisions on project funding, project development, and evidence dissemination. This internship is remote or in-person and has a flexible start date of June/July. Individuals from anywhere in Africa are eligible to apply.


Research Internship

Research interns will support lab-in-field style data collection activities in Johannesburg as part of an ongoing labour market study. Activities include desk-based research, data analysis, assisting with fieldwork, events coordination as well as developing of project materials.This internship is in-person in Johannesburg and has a flexible start date of June/July. Only those with the legal right to work either part time or full time in South Africa will be considered.


Communications Internship

The intern will support the implementation of J-PAL's communications strategy, and actively gather and analyse information about J-PAL Africa's target audiences. The intern will also support the delivery of J-PAL Africa's communications activities and content generation such as synthesizing evidence, drafting tweets and organising events as needed. This internship is remote and has a start date of the beginning of May. Individuals from anywhere in Africa are eligible to apply.

Requirements:

  • A degree in:
  1. Economics,
  2. Statistics,
  3. Development
  4. or related field
  5. OR studying towards a degree in these fields and in the final year.
  • For MicroMasters students: At least one completed MicroMasters course. Preference will be given to applicants with competitive MicroMasters course grades (75% and above) who have completed multiple DEDP courses (particularly Data Analysis for Social Scientists and Designing and Running Randomized Evaluations). Applicants should indicate which MicroMasters courses they have completed in their application and include a copy of their program record (available through the MicroMasters portal).
  • Strong interest in social policy and development research.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent communicator.
  • Ability to speak French, in addition to English, is highly advantageous for the policy internships.
  • Ability to speak a South African language, in addition to English, is highly advantageous for the research internship.
  • Ability to code in R or Stata or a similar software is advantageous, particularly for the research internship.
