Job Purpose

  • To undertake effective testing of substation installations, protection systems and equipment, fault location, mal-operations investigations and acceptance testing of various equipment/materials.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Responsible to the Manager Protection and Test for the effective control and functioning of the Test Division.
  • Undertake technical investigations in the heavy current field relating to protection systems and electrical apparatus.
  • Conduct the pre-commission testing of high voltage, medium voltage and substation installations, protection schemes and equipment.
  • Locate faults in high, medium and low voltage cables and equipment.
  • Undertake research and investigations into any incidents of protection mal-operations and compiles reports thereon.
  • Install and wire protection relays and protection schemes.
  • Undertake routine and special technical investigations and quality tests of a heavy current nature as requisitioned by other Branches or Departments.
  • Conduct acceptance testing of electrical equipment and apparatus and the certification of compliance with Departmental Standards and relevant specifications ie SABS, IEC and BS.
  • Maintains technical records and drawings of various types of protective devices and schemes.
  • Implements Departmental policies and supervises the performance, training and conduct of staff.
  • Institutes financial controls, monitoring expenditure and ensuring adherence to financial budgets.
  • Compile reports, maintain statistics and handles correspondence associated with the Division.
  • Assumes appointment in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1993 and associated Regulations.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor of Technology Degree or Bachelor of Engineering NQF Level 7 in Electrical Engineering Heavy Current.
  • Registration as a Professional Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa ECSA.
  • Valid motor vehicle driving license.
  • 5 years post registration experience in the Electrical Protection environment.
  • Computer Literacy.
