Qualification: Diploma or bachelor degree and HTM Certified Medical Gas Installer (CMGI) or Certified Medical Gas Maintenance Technician (CMGMT).

Driving License: Yes, Mandatory

Languages: English, Hindi & Arabic is Plus

A Medical Gas Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the installation, maintenance, and repair of medical gas systems in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities. Medical gases, including oxygen, nitrous oxide, and medical air, are essential for patient care in these environments, and it is the technician's responsibility to make sure these systems are functioning safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

  1. Installation of Medical Gas Systems:
    • Install and set up piping systems for medical gases (such as oxygen, medical air, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide).
    • Ensure that medical gas equipment is properly integrated into the facility's infrastructure.
    • Adhere to strict standards, codes, and regulations when installing systems.
    • Ensure that the appropriate alarms, shut-off valves, and regulators are installed correctly.
  2. Maintenance of Medical Gas Systems:
    • Regularly inspect, test, and maintain systems to ensure they meet operational standards.
    • Replace or repair parts such as regulators, alarms, and valves as needed.
    • Perform system checks to ensure there is no leakage or malfunction.
    • Ensure gas supply systems are regularly purged, especially in case of contaminants.
  3. Repairs of Medical Gas Systems:
    • Diagnose issues related to gas supply, pressure, or distribution.
    • Respond to emergency repair requests, especially if the system fails or is malfunctioning.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve leaks, faulty equipment, or pressure issues.
    • Conduct repairs on medical gas lines, valves, and regulators.
  4. Safety and Compliance:
    • Follow industry standards, safety guidelines, and codes (such as NFPA 99 and ISO 7396-1) to maintain safe practices in installation, maintenance, and repair.
    • Ensure all medical gas systems comply with local, state, and national regulations.
    • Monitor the integrity of oxygen systems to prevent fire hazards or explosions.
    • Educate staff on proper use and maintenance practices of medical gas equipment.
  5. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
    • Keep track of any equipment replaced or repaired and update the systems accordingly.
    • Provide reports to healthcare facility managers on the status of medical gas systems and any work done.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education/Certification: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Many employers prefer candidates with additional training in medical gas systems, which may be available through technical schools or apprenticeships. Certification from a recognized body (such as the National Fire Protection Association or the Medical Gas Professional Healthcare Organization) is often required. Some certifications include Certified Medical Gas Installer (CMGI) or Certified Medical Gas Maintenance Technician (CMGMT).
  • Technical Skills: Proficient knowledge of medical gas systems, valves, regulators, and alarms. Familiarity with piping systems, welding, brazing, and soldering. Understanding of safety regulations and medical gas codes.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems related to medical gas systems. Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and address complex repair situations.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in tight spaces or on ladders.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision is essential when working with medical gas systems to avoid errors that can affect patient safety.

Work Environment:

  • Settings: Primarily healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and surgical centers.
  • Shift Work: Emergency repairs may require working outside normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays.
  • Physical Demands: Work may involve standing, kneeling, bending, or lifting heavy objects.
