The Substitute School Nurse will be part of a small dynamic team staffing the School Clinic. She will be responsible for implementing the school health program in the absence of the permanent school nurse and is required to provide health care and emergency first aid services to students and employees in the American School Dhahran as needed throughout the school year.
- Job Duties
- Demonstrate a commitment to the safety and security of children and young people (child protection)
- Cover all the duties of the full-time nurse and she is called when any one of the staff members is absent
- Provide healthcare to students and staff who have been injured or who present with acute illnesses. Care may involve treatment of health problems within the scope of nursing practice, communication with parents for treatment, and referral to other health care providers. The substitute school nurse uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for students with chronic health conditions. The substitute school nurse is responsible for medication administration and the performance of health care procedures within the scope of nursing practice. The substitute school nurse also assists faculty and staff in monitoring chronic health conditions
- Provide leadership for the provision of health services
- As the health care expert within the school, the substitute school nurse assesses the overall system of care and develops a plan for assuring that health needs are met. It also includes developing a plan for responding to emergencies and disasters and training staff to respond appropriately
- Screen and refer for health conditions in order to address potential health problems that are barriers to learning or symptoms of underlying medical conditions, the school nurse engages in screening activities, referrals and follow-up
- Promote a healthy school environment for the physical and emotional safety of the school community. The substitute school nurse monitors immunizations, assures appropriate exclusion from school, and reports communicable diseases as required. The school nurse provides leadership to the school in implementing precautions for bloodborne pathogens and other infectious diseases, assesses the physical environment of the school, and takes action to improve health and safety
- Promote and provide health education by providing information/guidance to students, teachers and families. The substitute school nurse is a member of the coordinated school health team that promotes the health and well being of school members through collaborative efforts
- Liaise between school personnel, family, community and health care providers
- The substitute school nurse communicates with the family through telephone calls, written communication, and serves as a representative of the school community. The substitute school nurse also communicates with other health care providers while maintaining appropriate confidentiality
- The school substitute nurse may take on additional roles/hours to meet the needs of the school community and any other duties as assigned by the Lead Nurse
- Qualifications and Knowledge
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a related field of study
- Current certification/registration for nursing license
- Current CPR certification
- Experience and Skills
**Experience**
- Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office
- Experience in working within a school or community setting
- Minimum of 3 years experience working in the medical field as a healthcare provider
**Skills**
- Excellent command of English, both verbal and written
