**Basic Function**:
Performs mainly blood collection procedure on patients of all age and gender. This procedure may be either venipuncture or capillary as appropriate in order to get quality specimen to perform the tests requested and produce accurate results. Interprets physicians orders, determines the type and amount of specimen required. Issues appropriate non-blood specimen containers to the patient and receives blood and non-blood specimens in the computer system. Also, performs segregation and processing of specimens as situation requires. In addition, performs advanced phlebotomy techniques if needed.
**Scope**:
Assigned to any Clinical Laboratory of the JHAH, including districts, (Dhahran, Al-Hasa, Ras Tanura, Abqaiq or Udhailiyah). Performs phlebotomy procedure on out-patients and hospitalized patients. Receives supervision from the superiors. May be required to work in shift responsibilities. May be assigned to further job related trainings to improve the work environment.
**Principal Contacts**:
Has daily direct contact with patients and patient’s family members if needed for the sole purpose of blood collection. Also has daily contact with Clinical Laboratory staff, Physicians and Nurses.
**Principal Duties**:
In addition to the prior preparation for the phlebotomy procedure:
- Confirms the laboratory orders and the chosen patients are appropriate.
- Makes sure that the orders are being collected in a timely manner as per the priority.
- Performs routine and advanced collection techniques requiring special patient preparation, special collection tubes and priority collections from difficult and VIP patients.
- Interacts with the patients, physicians and nurses if needed, in such a way to maintain the positive laboratory image. Also resolves the patients’ complaints amicably in order to satisfy them.
- Gathers correct information from the test catalog available in the computer system and provides the patients, physicians and nurses with appropriate preparation procedure to be followed for the special tests.
- Makes sure that phlebotomy supplies are always available in-hand and updates the work director of the status.
- Receives blood and non-blood specimens in the system and dispatch to the appropriate sections.
- Generates the pending log and unreceived log and takes appropriate action on it.
- Performs Point of care glucose testing and enters the results of patients and QCs in the system.
- Performs sweat chloride tests and enters the results and QCs in the system.
- Trains new hires in all phlebotomy procedure and related activities including isolation procedure if needed.
- Demonstrates professionalism, follows proper dress code policy, maintains personal hygiene, smart look and courteous and compassionate expression to convince and persuade the patients to successfully complete the phlebotomy task.
- Performs the task with full confidence and skill.
- Performs other job related miscellaneous activities requested by the seniors or the supervisory personnel.
**Education**:
- High School Certificate or equivalent is required.
- 2 years Diploma in medical technology is preferred.
**Experience**:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience or in phlebotomy procedures.
**Certifications/Other requirements as applicable**:
**Language**:
Good verbal and written English. Knowledge of Arabic is also preferred.
**Skills**:
- Acceptable level of understanding of Clinical lab standards and other hospital standards.
- Good computer skills.
- Must have good communication skill and able to explain the tests and requirements in English and /or Arabic to the patients and family members. Must have good tact to persuade and inspire confidence in the patients in order to reassure the patients.
- Good manual dexterity is essential in order to perform procedures safely and effectively.
- Must have knowledge of basic human anatomy, especially the circulatory system.
- Capable to perform phlebotomy on all age groups, neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric.
- Must be capable of dealing with multi-nationals.
- Needs good communication skills as dealing with the healthcare professionals and support staff within JHAH is mandatory.
- Thorough knowledge of company policies and procedures, statistics, JHAH emergency disaster plans and response.
- Acceptable level of analytical ability in order to complete tasks assigned, gather and interpret data form different sources, and resolve problems.
**Other**:
- Must be qualified for the required Medical License.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (CPR) is needed.
- Willing to work shift pattern as required (day, evening, night).
- Willing to work overtime if required
- Flexible, and willing to work in any JHAH Clinical Laboratory District -wide (HA, RT, ABQ and UDH)
