The Yemen Office Network (YON) at the British Embassy Riyadh has a vacancy for Advisor to Defence Attaché on a fixed-term contract of two (2) years.

The jobholder will provide detailed, objective, and political-informed security and military analysis to the Defence Attaché (DA), Defence Section, and wider YON, in particular His Majesty’s Ambassador (HMA).

**Duties and responsibilities**:

- Research and analysis (55-60% of the role)
- Establish and maintain contact with a broad range of key stakeholders (both internal and external) with a high level of authority and influence in the Yemen Government and military/ security services.
- Produce detailed, accurate, and informed reports and briefs (both oral and written) on complex political/ military operational and policy issues, utilising experience and knowledge to offer comments underpinned by detailed analysis.
- Anticipate key strategic challenges in Yemen using sound judgement and advise the Defence Attaché (DA) and other stakeholders to inform policy responses on complex interrelated political and security issues.
- Undertake directed and autonomously derived research to inform DA and stakeholders.
- Advising and representing (35-40% of the role)
- Provide a high-quality service based on rigorous and evidence-led analysis and maintain a professional standard befitting His Majesty’s Government (HMG) and the British Embassy.
- Arrange and attend meetings with internal and external stakeholders, including Ministerial and other high-level visits.
- Represent the DA and other senior Embassy staff at internal and external meetings.
- Administration (5-10 % of the role)
- Translate documents within the time specified by the DA, Assistant to DA, or other Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) officials.
- Interpret at meetings attended by HMA, DA, ADA, or other FCDO officials.
- Central to ensuring success in obtaining diplomatic clearances of UK flights.
- Account for the efficient and effective expenditure of UK public funds.

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the line manager. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis affecting UK citizens.

**Eligibility**:
Essential qualifications, skills and experience 1
- Educated to degree level, or relevant experience of working in an Embassy/ Defence related environment, ideally for at least five (5) years.
- Relevant experience of working in or on Yemen, to include knowledge of Yemen’s cultural, political and security landscape; or equivalent relevant academic expertise.
- Native speaker or mother tongue level of communication skills in English and Arabic. Confidence to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
- Strong analysis skills, ideally with experience of delivering and coordinating conflict analysis and actionable recommendations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a team player with willingness to work across boundaries. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with contacts and colleagues and build effective working relationships.
- Flexible, resilient, decisive, and calm under pressure. Proven track record of delivering results to a high standard to tight deadlines.
- Excellent organisational ability. Proven ability to manage, plan, and prioritise tasks and workload. Proactive approach to problem solving.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience 1
- Experience of mediation and conflict resolution mechanisms.
- Relevant academic expertise on Yemen or the Yemen conflict, ideally at a master’s degree level or higher.
