**Basic Function**
- Provides 24 hour coverage in-house for the inpatient service of the respective specialty.
- Provides outpatient services when assigned to the clinic on an as needed basis.

**Scope**

He/she performs his/her duties under the professional supervision of the staff specialists, sub-specialists and leadership of service. His/her responsibilities involve mainly the evaluation of patients in the Emergency Room, admission of patients to the wards, ICU and Step-Down Unit as indicated and to provide coverage to the inpatient medical patients on a 24-hour basis.

Work hours are assigned to meet operational needs of the assigned area. Direction is through the Unit Head of Service.

**Principal Contacts**

He/she is in daily contact with patients, their families, nurses, other Staff Physicians, Professional Development Physicians and other medical staff. He/she is also in close contact with Emergency Medical Service physicians, Clinical Medicine Services physicians, Surgical & Diagnostic Services physicians, Radiology Services as well as other respective services requesting medical care by the General Internal Medicine Unit (GIMU).

**Principal Duties**
- To perform the duties as per the Privileges recommended by the Chief of Specialty Services and approved by the Credentials & Privileges Committee.
- To evaluate patients in the Emergency Room at the request of Emergency Medical Service physicians and/or other respective Specialties are requested.
- Assists in admission procedures of patients to the inpatient medical service; spectrum of care ranging from General Medical Wards to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This includes triage of patients to appropriate wards as well as full management of cases as indicated by GIMU.
- To perform the initial work-up and evaluation of patients admitted to the appropriate clinical setting.
- To follow-up patients during the hospital stay and plan the management of these patients under the supervision of and in consultation with the attending specialist/consultant.
- To make daily rounds on the inpatient service and make management decisions under the supervision of the attending specialist/consultant, and in consultation with the various specialty services, as required for appropriate patient care.
- To make discharge plans and discharges patients home or to another facility in consultation with attending specialist/consultant.
- To Dictate Discharge Summaries for discharged patients.
- Provides on-call coverage for the inpatient service on a rotational basis. When on-call, the Staff Physician must remain in the hospital in order to respond to requests of the nurses/other healthcare staff members to evaluate patients.
- To obtain the assistance of other specialists or various sub-specialists when in need, especially when the patient is facing a life-threatening situation.
- To provide immediate patient care assistance when called upon by specialist/consultant.

- To provide escort services to patients transferred to other hospitals.
- To provide supervision and education to the Professional Development Physicians and Interns.
- To attend and participate in any staff meetings of the service they work in.
- To participate and contribute to all the educational activities of the service.
- To participate and contribute to all the quality improvement activities of the service, i.e., daily morning report, Mortality and Morbidity Conferences and Peer Reviews.

**Education**
- Graduation from a recognized medical school MD
- One year of internship in a recognized training program

**Experience**
- Three years of Residency training in a specialty in a recognized training program. OR
- Two years of Residency training in a specialty in a specialty in recognized training program, plus three years of experience in a recognized hospital in the field of his/her specialty.

**Certifications/Other requirements as applicable**
- Must hold a valid license to practice medicine.
- Excellent command of verbal and written English
- Ability to adjust to group practice.
