Description

The staff nurse is accountable to the Delivery Room Charge Nurse for the delivery of high quality care of the patients at Dallah Hospital. The post holder is responsible for ensuring attainment of agreed clinical standards and professional development supported by colleagues and the Director of Nursing.

During the time period for which she is responsible, assesses the overall needs of the individual patients, assists in preparation and implements the nursing care process as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.

Day-to-day activities can include:

Sits with and monitors patient throughout (before/ during/ after) the labor.

Takes and records patient?s vital signs.

Monitors contractions and helps patient with breathing techniques.

Monitors the fetal heart rate to make sure the baby is doing well during labor and delivery.

Determines that delivery is imminent, moves the woman to the Delivery Room or gets her in position for delivery in a birthing bed.

Aids doctor with drapes, gloves, gowns, etc; hands doctor delivery instruments as needed during birthing process.

Ensures patient is in proper position for delivery and all monitoring equipment is functioning properly.

Encourage patient to push at proper time.

Records time of birth.

Immediate care of newborn (clean, weigh, etc.)

Gives Apgar Scores.

To handle both uncomplicated deliveries and a number of possible complications including eclampsia, diabetes, prolapsed cord, malpresentation and rupture uterus.

Assist the obstetrician or nurse, midwife with the delivery process by supporting and guiding the baby?s head using a bulb syringe to clean baby?s mouth and nose, checking to make sure the umbilical cord isn?t wrapped around the baby?s neck and clamping and removing the cord.

Identifies and manages life-sustaining physiological functions in unstable patients.

Inform anesthesiologist when if patient is ready for epidural, inform the attending obstetrician at appropriate time.

Maintains continuity of care during take-over and handover reports, ensuring that the communication is clear and accurate at all times.

Ensures that doctors? orders and patient management plans are followed and that appropriate steps are taken, including immediate notification of the resident on-call, of any deterioration from the expected course of the patient?s condition.

Ensures that the appropriate records of the patients? progress are maintained according to the hospital policies and procedures.

Ensure the safety of the patient, relatives and staff. Reporting untoward incident / accident / staff sickness to the Sister / Charge Nurse.

Maintain current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age and patient clinical conditions. Calculate, prepare, monitor, discontinue fluids and medication drips. Reports adverse reaction to medications.

Take an active role in the prevention and control of infection.

Contribute to the induction of new staff acting as a mentor when appropriate.

Participate in the Quality Improvement Program within his / her area of responsibilities.

Be committed to further development of own clinical skills and knowledge actively seeking learning opportunities as appropriate.

Ensures that the record of all drugs, IV fluids, etc, is up-to-date as required by the Pharmacy, and ensures that the rules and regulations governing the administration, storage and custody of all drugs and narcotics are strictly observed at all times.

Maintain skill and knowledge in using various medical devices such as ECG machine, Defibrillator, Infusion and Syringe Pump, CTG machine, Electronic fetal monitors and other equipment / machine used in Delivery Room.

Maintain skills and knowledge by participating various nursing education programs, in-service training, nursing symposium, workshops & etc.

Ensure that the necessary financial records are maintained for the Finance Department.

Staff should be competent as follows:

Provides appropriate newborn care and observation including resuscitation or assistance in resuscitation.

Provide safe and effective care for pregnant women during labour and immediate postpartum period.

Provides appropriate care and patient education in the prevention of thrombo-embolic events during labour, delivery and post delivery.

Provides care and observation for the patient requiring Entonox inhalation analgesia (Self Administration).

Provides appropriate care to woman with Diabetes labour.

Provides appropriate care to a woman with IUFD or Mid-trimester abortion in labour and delivery.

Provides care for the patient receiving epidural analgesia.

Assess fetal heart rate patterns using the electronic fetal monitor and provides appropriate care.

Provides appropriate care and intervention in the management of obstetric emergencies.,

Assesses fetal heart rate patterns using the electronic fetal monitor and provides appropriate care.

Provides appropriate care and intervention in the management of obstetric emergencies.

Participate in patient and family education to help patients and families to better understand and participate in their care and make well informed care decisions.This job description is not an exhaustive list of accountabilities and activities. Requirements

Two years post-basic experience, six months of which must be in the specialty

Previous experience in Middle Eastern healthcare.

Good command of English Language

Appropriate qualification and statutory nursing registration in the country from where recruited. BSN / RN.

Post-basic course qualification in the specialty.

Valid BLS, ACLS certificate.
