Medical Underwriting Assistant Manager

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Underwrite risks within own authority, ensuring profitability, consistency, and adherence to company standards while achieving expected mortality results.
- Assist underwriters in reviewing and approving cases beyond their authority, offering second opinions, and supporting peak-period workloads.
- Train and develop underwriters through company-sponsored educational courses and delegate appropriate authority levels.
- Ensure underwriting comments are properly documented in a chronological and concise manner.
- Maintain compliance with company standards in collaboration with actuaries, medical professionals, and other relevant entities.
- Handle claims referred by the Claims Department, taking timely action on contestability and decision modifications while reviewing original underwriting decisions for learning purposes.
- Analyze claims trends and underwriting performance to recommend adjustments to pricing models and policy benefits.
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations on underwriting performance and market trends for management.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and direct clients to meet business objectives.
- Establish procedures, guidelines, goals, and authority levels for the department.
- Ensure turnaround times are maintained and workflow is evenly distributed among underwriters.
- Oversee and audit the underwriting and risk selection process for the medical line.
- Work closely with claims, actuarial, and sales teams to enhance underwriting strategies and processes.
- Manage specifically assigned projects as needed.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Management Information Systems, Accounting, or Finance.
Experience:
- 6+ years in medical underwriting.
