Job Purpose:

  • The Assistant Curator supports the General Curator in managing the animal care, exhibit development, and conservation initiatives at Corallium: Marine Life Institute.
  • This role involves overseeing the daily care and welfare of the marine life, assisting in the design and implementation of exhibits, and contributing to the Institute's research and conservation goals.
  • The Assistant Curator also plays a key role in staff training, education, and public outreach efforts.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist the General Curator in overseeing the daily care and welfare of the marine life, ensuring that all animals are healthy, well-nourished, and housed in environments that meet their specific needs.
  • Supervise and mentor the animal care staff, providing guidance and training to ensure best practices in husbandry, health monitoring, and exhibit maintenance.
  • Participate in the planning, design, and execution of new exhibits, collaborating with the curatorial and life support teams to ensure that exhibits are both educational and environmentally appropriate for the species.
  • Contribute to the Institute's conservation and research initiatives, including conducting or supporting field research, species rehabilitation, and breeding programs.
  • Monitor water quality and other environmental parameters in collaboration with the life support team, ensuring optimal conditions for all marine exhibits.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of educational programs and public outreach initiatives, engaging with visitors to promote awareness of marine conservation and the Institute's mission.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal health, breeding, and exhibit conditions, ensuring that all documentation meets regulatory and institutional standards.
  • Support the General Curator in coordinating with external conservation organizations, researchers, and regulatory bodies to further the Institute's conservation goals.
  • Manage the logistics of acquiring new species, including transportation, quarantine procedures, and acclimation to the new environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental, safety, and animal welfare regulations, conducting regular audits and inspections to maintain high standards.
  • Handle guest inquiries and feedback related to the animal exhibits, providing information, and resolving issues in a professional manner.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of the department's budget, optimizing resource allocation to meet both operational needs and conservation goals.
  • Develop operational protocols and standard operating procedures related to marine life facilities.
  • Assist in the design, development, and operation of marine life-related projects.
  • Work with Red Sea Global and Red Sea Zone Authority to address environmental sensitivities.
  • Assist in the pre-opening preparation plan for Corallium, ensuring a seamless launch.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Marine Life Operations across the organization.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Marine Biology, Zoology, Conservation Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in curatorial or animal management roles within public aquariums or zoological institutions, including life support operations.
  • Proven leadership experience in supervising curatorial teams, marine animal collections, and conservation programs.
  • Extensive knowledge of marine biology and conservation with a focus on species native to the Red Sea.
  • Familiarity with national and international regulations governing animal care and public aquariums.
  • Experience with public engagement strategies and designing educational programs.
  • Competency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • First Aid, CPR, and Oxygen Administration certifications required.
  • PADI Divemaster or equivalent (preferred).

Skills:

  • Strong team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performing team.
  • Expertise in marine animal husbandry and exhibit maintenance, with a focus on maintaining high welfare standards.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities, with experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact with diverse audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex issues related to animal care and exhibit management.
  • Proficiency in using relevant software for record-keeping and reporting.
  • Excellent standard of written and spoken English.

Job Context:

This is a "Front of House" and "Back of House" position with direct guest contact and constant interaction with staff and contractors. The role requires working during operating hours and occasionally outside normal facility operating hours as needed.

As the facility will not be operational at the time of employment, the position holder will need to implement all pre-operational requirements, including but not limited to:

  • Setting up of the facility.
  • Interview and recommend applicants for available positions while adhering to the local Labor Law and Equal Employment Opportunity policies in order to hire the best candidate for the job.
  • Supporting the training program for team members and equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitude in order to perform their jobs effectively.
  • Work with internal collaborators & external service providers to ensure operational readiness.
