Consultant, Medical Microbiology

Responsible for the provision of medical care in the field of Medical Microbiology, in accordance with current medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations and the Hospital’s policies and procedures
**Essential Responsibilities and Duties**:
Clinical Responsibilities
1. Studies microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that are of medical importance and cause diseases in human beings.
2. Studies microbial pathogenesis, epidemiology, disease pathology and immunology.
3. Provides clinical consultations on the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients suffering from infectious diseases.
4. Leads the development and conduct of infection control programs across the continuum of care.
5. Provides consultations and interpretations on tests performed by the laboratory.
6. Evaluates final reports for accuracy and highlights any abnormalities to the physician.
7. Provides technical direction, planning and organization to relevant sections of the laboratory.
8. Trains and assists personnel in the proper implementation and operations of all routine and complex procedures.
9. Ensures appropriate patient preparation for procedures such as fine needle aspirations and bone marrow biopsy and performs procedures as indicated in the signed clinical privilege form.
10. Maintains state-of-the-art methodologies and research literature for current update. Maintains an ongoing program for continuing education through lectures, presentations, and case histories.
11. Shares on
- call schedule as per requirements.
12. Performs any other clinical responsibilities, as assigned.
Academic Responsibilities
1. Directs and advices junior staff on patient management, especially in the field of Medical Microbiology.
2. Guides and actively participates in the training and teaching of Residents, Fellows, Assistant Consultants and junior staff.
3. Keeps abreast with all the latest techniques and developments, especially in the field of Medical Microbiology, following and implementing them on a selective basis to improve technical standards.
4. Actively participates in the educational activities and training programs of the department.
5. Participates in national and international medical conferences.
Research Responsibilities
1. Participates in clinical, basic and translational research projects and publishes papers in accordance with Research Advisory Council Policy in order to advance knowledge, improve the quality of post graduate education and contribute to the national and international recognition of KFSH&RC.
Administrative Responsibilities
1. Undertakes the administrative duties assigned by Head of Section or Chairman of the department.
2. Participates in all mandatory departmental activities and serves on departmental and hospital committees, as required.
3. Assists the department in the development and implementation of techniques and practices that help maximize the utilization of all resources within the department and across the hospital.
4. Abides by the current hospital and medical staff bylaws, all relevant rules, regulations and policies and keeps updated of any changes that might occur.
5. Follows all Hospital related policies and procedures.
6. Participates in self and others education, training and development, as applicable.
**Education**:
Graduation from an accredited medical school, completion of required period of training in specialty and/or subspecialty, with Arab or American Board certification, membership and/or fellowship status in the United Kingdom and/or Canada or their equivalent.
**Experience Required**:
Seven (7) Years of training in specialty or subspecialty plus postgraduate training experience must be equal to or exceed seven (7) years’ experience in the subspecialty.
