Job Overview

As a key member of the KAUST Supercomputing Laboratory team, the Systems Administration Lead will be responsible for overseeing the smooth operation of the Linux cluster consisting of 300+ GPU/CPU compute nodes, including parallel filesystems and high-performance networks. This is a technical and people-leadership role that involves supervising a team of experienced HPC system administrators. The successful candidate will be expected to develop, implement, and supervise standard operating procedures for the system and the team.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Plan and coordinate system upgrades to meet laboratory requirements.
  2. Develop and implement workload scheduler policies.
  3. Support high-performance filesystems and network infrastructure management.
  4. Manage hardware failures and spare parts.
  5. Leverage scripting languages for node automation and configuration management.
  6. Build effective relationships with staff, faculty, and students through the Core Labs.
  7. Oversee multiple projects, utilizing sophisticated project planning techniques.
  8. Identify technical training needs for staff and provide resources for incident response.
  9. Promote innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities.

Key Competencies
  1. SLURM workload manager expertise, including GPU scheduling.
  2. Parallel filesystem knowledge (Weka IO, Lustre).
  3. TCP/IP and high-performance network proficiency (Infiniband).
  4. Scripting language proficiency (Bash, Python, Ruby).
  5. Familiarity with configuration management tools (Puppet).
  6. Effective documentation skills.
