Role Description
As Senior Structural Designer – Steel Structures, you will own the structural design and detailing of all steel and secondary support works in the company – from façade sub-frames and fixing brackets to heavy steel structures, platforms, and support frames for UHPC, GRC, GRG and other architectural systems.
You will sit between management, structural consultants, design, production, and site teams – ensuring that every steel solution is structurally sound, buildable, cost-efficient, and coordinated with architecture and MEP. This is a senior technical role, not a pure drafting position; you are expected to challenge unsafe or non-practical details, optimise designs, and standardise solutions across projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead structural design and detailing of steel structures, sub-frames, support systems, and brackets for GRC/GRG/UHPC and other cladding/architectural works.
- Develop structural concepts, load paths, and connection details for façade support systems in coordination with architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
- Prepare or review structural calculations (manual and/or software-based) for gravity, wind, seismic, and other applicable loads in line with relevant codes and client requirements.
- Design and detail welded and bolted connections, base plates, stiffeners, and anchor arrangements for concrete, steel, and block substrates.
- Prepare high-quality fabrication drawings, GA drawings, erection drawings, and bill of materials (BOM) for workshops and site teams.
- Standardise typical details, steel sections, and connection types to improve repeatability, speed, and cost efficiency across projects.
- Review and validate third-party designs (e.g. consultant/shop drawings), raise RFIs, and propose design optimisations where required.
- Coordinate closely with project engineers, BIM/drafting teams, production, and site to resolve technical issues and support smooth fabrication and installation.
- Participate in technical meetings with consultants/contractors and clearly present structural design assumptions, constraints, and proposed solutions.
- Support procurement by defining material specifications (grades, coatings, galvanizing, tolerances, etc.) and reviewing supplier technical offers.
- Ensure that all structural design work respects applicable codes, safety factors, tolerances, and practical installation constraints.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- 6–10 years of experience in structural design, with a strong focus on steel structures and/or secondary steel for façades and cladding.
- Proven experience on façade / cladding / architectural steel projects (GRC, GRG, UHPC, curtain wall, canopies, or similar).
- Experience in Saudi Arabia / GCC projects and familiarity with regional practices and codes is a strong advantage.
- Strong spoken and written English; Arabic is an advantage.
- Membership in a professional engineering body (or eligibility) is a plus.
Key Skills and Competencies
- Solid understanding of steel design principles, load paths, connection detailing, tolerances, and site erection constraints.
- Strong ability to translate architectural intent into safe, buildable, and cost-efficient structural solutions.
- High attention to detail – does not tolerate unclear, unsafe, or poorly coordinated details or drawings.
- Comfortable working with design codes (e.g. AISC, Eurocode, SBC or equivalent) and interpreting consultant/authority requirements.
- Clear, direct communication – able to challenge non-buildable or risky details and propose simpler, practical alternatives.
- Strong coordination skills across architecture, structure, MEP, and site teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining technical quality and documentation discipline.
Software Skills
Required
- Strong experience with at least one structural analysis and design software (e.g. STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, ETABS, Robot, or similar).
- AutoCAD – high level for 2D detailing, sections, and fabrication/erection drawings.
- Practical experience with Microsoft Excel for calculation sheets, schedules, and BOMs.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Tekla Structures or similar steel detailing software.
- Exposure to Revit or BIM-based workflows for coordination with BIM teams.
- Familiarity with connection design tools (e.g. IDEA StatiCa or similar).
