Role Purpose:

The Head of therapy is responsible for overseeing and managing the allied health therapy department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality therapeutic services to patients. This leadership position involves developing and implementing therapy programs across various disciplines, providing guidance and professional development opportunities for physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other allied health professionals. The Head of Therapy required to lead and support Allied Health staff in the provision of high quality and efficient patient care across a broad and diverse portfolio in both a multifaceted Tertiary hospital and community setting. The Head of Therapy also plays a key role in coordinating with other healthcare departments to provide integrated care, managing departmental budgets and resources, and staying updated with the latest trends and best practices in therapeutic interventions. This position is crucial for ensuring that patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care tailored to their individual recovery needs and contributes to the overall success of the allied health department.

Key responsibilities of the role:

Managerial/Administration:

  • Contribute to developing therapy service standards and ensure they are consistently met.
  • Deliver high clinical and operational performance standards by developing and supporting the allied health professions.
  • Collaborates with doctors, nursing and allied health staff, interdisciplinary teams, executive officers and other stakeholders in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
  • Leads the allied health team and is responsible for the overall service delivery.
  • Delegates responsibilities appropriate to licensure, education, and experience of staff.
  • Recognizing the diverse skill levels of individual staff members and the unique needs of the patient population when developing staffing plans; and ensuring appropriate levels of staffing for the required level of care.
  • Responsible for ensuring that allied health staff adhere to the Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice set by the regulatory body.
  • To effectively market, promote, and increase awareness of the service among patients, referrers, and the general public, as well as to actively engage in business development activities.

Technical:

  • Responsible for implementing age-appropriate patient care in line with the organization's mission, vision, and values.
  • Work with patients with various conditions, such as neurological, neuromusculoskeletal, cardiovascular, oncological, and respiratory issues.
  • Develop and review treatment programs that promote patient independence and functionality.
  • Align treatment plans with assessments and patient expectations, and communicate with the patient team about equipment recommendations and home environment as part of admission and discharge planning.
  • Collaborate with family members to conduct home trials, obtain necessary equipment, and arrange follow-up care as needed.
  • Demonstrates advanced clinical expertise in the specialty and uses evidence-based practice to develop and implement standards that guide practice improvement initiatives.

Quality & Safety:

  • Participates in assigned quality management activities with a personal level of accountability, such as the accreditation process.
  • Evaluates factors related to safety, outcomes, effectiveness, cost, and social impact when developing and implementing practice innovations.
  • Assumes overall responsibility for ordering and controlling supplies, and liaises with the Supply Chain Manager to ensure that purchasing of supplies is within the constraints of available resources.
  • Participates in the Hospital's Quality and Audit Programs and evaluates the impact of new practices.

Education:

  • Actively participates in staff development activities consistent with service delivery and individual learning goals.
  • Maintains a primary role in departmental and interdepartmental related educational activities.
  • Maintains a significant role in the creation and execution of Rehabilitation and Hospital programs, hospital quality development, policy and procedures and competencies.
  • Liaises with the CMO in planning staff development needs and programs for all allied health staff.

Qualifications & Years of Experience:

  • Physiotherapy B.Sc or graduated in an accredited diploma program (not less than 3 years syllabus).
  • Maintains valid, current licensure from own country.
  • BLS certification
  • 6 years and above.
