Role Purpose:

The Decarbonization Unit within the NEOM Environment Department is searching for an experienced and innovative professional to lead the newly formed NEOM Decarbonization Unit. This is an exciting and unique opportunity for an experienced career professional with highly developed leadership acumen and technical knowledge. The NEOM giga-project aims to be the most environmentally conscious and sustainable development project on the planet. This role is critical to inspire and enable the Business to implement and deliver the NEOM Decarbonization Strategy and wider NEOM Sustainability vision

Key Accountabilities & Activities:

The Decarbonization Program Director - will lead the newly established Decarbonization Unit, and will be accountable and responsible for the implementation, maintenance and monitoring of NEOM's decarbonization strategy, reporting and verification of NEOM's carbon emission and offsets, overseeing the green partnerships and investment program, and communication of NEOM's decarbonization efforts to internal and external stakeholders. Crucially, this role will interface and help activate NEOM's other Sustainability ambitions related to Sustainable Built Environment, Circular Economy, and Future Cities and will underpin NEOM-wide ESG Reporting and external investor interests.

Project delivery

  • Oversee the execution of the full mandate of the NEOM Decarbonization Unit (i.e., PMO of construction decarbonization levers, monitoring and reporting, partnership program, and communications)
  • Lead the implementation of NEOM's Decarbonization Strategy, and conduct periodic refresh when required
  • Set targets and track progress of NEOM wide construction and other sector decarbonization levers.
  • Provide guidance, technical inputs on key decarbonization technologies or trends
  • Develop (and support the development) of the decarbonization unit key guidelines, methodologies, tools, templates, procedures, and dashboards
  • Research, propose and initiate appropriate external partnerships in line with the key pillars and objectives of NEOM Decarbonization Strategy and as it relates to Sustainable Built Environment, and Circular Economy.
  • Participate in departmental budget considerations and processes and help ensure overall departmental budget approval and performance
  • Actively contribute to new projects/initiatives related to NEOM Decarbonization Strategy
  • Collaborate and actively contribute to implementation of other NEOM Sustainability initiatives (circular economy, built environment, sustainable supply chain etc.)
  • Support in establishment of a Global Decarbonization Center

Stakeholder engagement

  • Ensure regular reporting to CEO and steering committee and plan periodic touch points
  • Developing strong relationships across the organization and stakeholders
  • Identify and proactively engage with key internal and external stakeholders across NEOM as required to achieve delivery of all related areas of NEOM Environmental Strategy, specifically in Decarbonization
  • Champion awareness campaigns on various decarbonization topics within NEOM
  • Represent NEOM in climate change and sustainability forums

Team and people leadership

  • Oversee overall NEOM Decarbonization Unit and support in capability building of unit members (e.g., internal trainings, workshops, on the job training, etc.)
  • Engage in recruiting team members and resource allocation
  • Create and implement a team development plan to identify and address the skills and knowledge gaps of team members
  • Provide regular feedback and coaching to team members to help them develop their skills and careers
  • Foster collaborative and supportive work environment where team members feel valued and respected
  • Promote diversity and inclusion within the team and the Decarbonization Unit as a whole
  • Represent the Decarbonization Unit to other departments and stakeholders
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to support the Decarbonization Unit's goals

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

The Director Decarbonization should have a track record in delivering critical strategic projects for comparable scale/ context and have a good working knowledge of the most common existing green construction and circular economy frameworks, international standards, and carbon accounting.

The ability to lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams with significant opposing interests, to not only embrace but deliver NEOMS ambitious decarbonisation strategy is of paramount importance.

Tasks may include decarbonisation culture building, project leadership, overseeing preparation of consultant statements of work, desktop research, technical input, chairing meetings, stakeholder engagement, document/ presentation preparation and review.

As a minimum the role will require:

  • 12+ years of experience in sustainability or decarbonization with strong exposure to construction industry
  • Strong track record of managing and executing complex projects
  • Deep knowledge of sustainability principles and practices in the construction industry and corporate
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with a proven track record of effective leadership.
  • Knowledge of carbon accounting principles and tools, including international frameworks, standards, guidelines and methodologies, product-level carbon accounting and life cycle assessment (LCA) principles, as well as industry-specific initiatives and regulations related to carbon accounting and decarbonization.
  • Strong understanding of ESG reporting and associated GHG reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of decarbonization technologies and their application in the construction industry.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data to drive decision-making.
  • Excellent leadership communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact and influence stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.

Qualifications
