Job Summary

The Senior Registrar is responsible for providing care to his/her patients (inpatients) while maintaining a high level of professional performance in accordance with:

  • Professional medical ethics and JCIA/CBAHI standards.
  • Hospital medical by-laws.
  • Laws of the Ministry of Health in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and any other applicable regulations according to the departmental quality plan.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures superior quality of medical treatment, compassion, and understanding is given to every patient served at the NMC Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Provides patient care within the parameters of their professional competence as reflected in the scope of their clinical privileges.
  • Performs history taking, physical examinations, interpretation of common diagnostic tests, and documents patient condition on admission in the specified admissions sheet as per JCIA standards.
  • Can admit emergency cases (patients from the hospital E.R) or elective cases remaining within his privileges as determined by the HOD after appropriate discussion with the consultant.
  • Evaluates new admissions and coordinates a plan of investigation to establish a diagnosis and management course with or without consultant assistance as determined by the HOD.
  • Conducts daily ward rounds to all inpatients in the department alone or as a team with other department staff as determined by the HOD.
  • Documents the plan of patient management and maintains appropriate records of all patients with accurate, timely, and legible completion of medical records.
  • Seeks the advice or help of the Consultant whenever the condition of a patient merits further expertise.
  • Prepares all discharge summaries, death reports, and special reports on related patients, particularly when the registrar is not available or when advised by the HOD.
  • Assesses and refers appropriate patients under his/her medical care to other medical facilities and accepts referrals of patients with medical problems in his/her specialty.
  • Presents new admissions to the department through daily morning reports when on duty.
  • Observes and upholds the patients' rights of security, confidentiality, and privacy.
  • Participates actively in the on-call rota of the department for patient care and admissions, responding to emergencies to offer medical care and advice on problems related to his/her specialty.
  • Participates in the delivery of medical care in OPD as determined by the HOD.
  • Assists Senior staff (Consultant) in performing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures on patients in his field of specialty.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the range of his operative privileges.
  • Supervises Junior Staff in conducting their duties as designated by the department.
  • Actively participates in department's educational and training activities.
  • Abides by department Policies and Procedures as well as hospital by-laws, Rules, and Regulations.
  • Educates patients/families as per their needs and implements their role regarding the patient/family education process.
  • Involves patients/families in the plan of care and respects their goals and choices regarding patient care.
  • Provides health promotion and health teaching through methods appropriate to a patient's developmental level, learning needs, and cultural context.
  • Allots time necessary to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient education provided to patients/families with appropriate documentation.
  • Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee's knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Performs additional tasks and duties as assigned by Superiors.

Reporting to

Consultant ENT and Head, Department of Surgery.

Registrars, Residents, GP, Nurses, and other paramedical staff assigned to him.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Saudi Board or American Board or Canadian Fellowship, or FRCS or Equivalent.

Higher qualifications in his specialty, if any.

EXPERIENCE:

Required:

Minimum three (3) years in his/her specialty after obtaining a Master's Degree.

Current valid license to practice medicine in the area of his specialty.

Fluent in verbal and written English.

Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Knowledge of computer applications.
