Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design Manager to lead our interior design team at Sumitomo Electric. As a key member of our design department, you will be responsible for managing and supporting the team to deliver high-quality interior design solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategy Development and Implementation
    • Develop and implement best-in-class interior design strategies to ensure perceived quality, uniqueness, comfort, performance, and brand strategy compliance.
    • Coach and mentor the design team to think creatively and develop innovative solutions.
    • Evaluate and participate in product concept and strategy creation.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement design and brand strategies.
  • Project Management
    • Manage and implement the design process, workloads, timing, and resources planning.
    • Produce and share descriptive and exhaustive feedback reports for the design team on their ongoing projects.
    • Meet with other departments' management regularly to ensure synergy and common goals.
    • Attend program and engineering reviews as required and action next steps.
    • Keep a weekly updated overview of technical and design issues.
    • Build and maintain strong cross-departmental partnerships through the creation process with interior advanced design, CMF, UI/UX, modeling, engineering, and external suppliers' teams.
  • Vendor Selection/Management
    • Organize meetings, workshops, and brainstorming sessions when necessary, maintaining a good understanding and knowledge interaction.
    • Record and communicate meeting protocols and respond to specific requirements, ensuring a good project workflow.
    • Lead the project with the support of engineering and the multidisciplinary team.
  • People Management
    • Build and establish an open, honest, supportive, and understanding design culture (talent acquisition, training, growth, etc.).
    • Allocate design resources within projects to the best competencies, building team self-confidence.
    • Plan activities for the Interior Design Team (workshops, brainstorming, cultural activities, team-building activities).
    • Conduct performance reviews for team members.
    • Care for the studio environment, physical and interpersonal relations.
    • Be a role model, live the values, and communicate the design pillars to other departments.
  • Reporting
    • Prepare and attend project status overviews and roadmaps to define goals and milestones.
    • Attend project presentations to top management and actively participate in their preparation and presentation.
    • Report functional status regularly and escalate critical issues to the Design Director as required.
    Requirements
    • Education
      • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Transportation Design or Industrial Design.
    • Skills & Competencies
      • Expert in car interior concept and production.
      • Experienced with time and resource management.
      • Good understanding of manufacturing processes and perceived quality.
      • Experience with steering Alias, Vred, Subd, Blender, and Adobe Creative Suite.
      • Experienced in Microsoft Office.
      • Materials, design, art, trend, innovation, and bench awareness.
      • Excellent professional communication skills, spoken & written.
      • Great communication skills with engineering and design leadership and VIPs.
      • Fluency in spoken and written English.
    • Minimum Experience
      • 10+ years.
      • EOM experience and/or startup automotive design studio.
      • 2 years lead/management experience or related position.
