Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
The British Embassy Riyadh has a vacancy for a Head Butler on a fixed term contract of two (2) years.
Working closely with the Residence Manager, Chef, and other members of the Residence Team, the jobholder will provide high quality service in the smooth running of British Ambassador’s Residence in Riyadh ensure the comfort of all its occupants and guests. This role is central to the smooth running of the Ambassador’s daily needs and key events including dinners, lunches, and receptions for guests, as well as driving for Residence and private guests’ as and when required. They will ensure that the Residence facilities and services are delivered in a pro-active, discreet, thoughtful, and timely manner.
**Duties and responsibilities**:
- Supervise Under Butler, Housekeeper, and Gardener. This involves establishing a duties roster and helping them in their daily chores, in collaboration with the Residence Manager.
- Greeting houseguests and showing them to their rooms, offering refreshments, and taking care of them throughout their stay and provide a high quality front of house service.
- Support in arranging different aspects of functions in the Residence. This will include, but is not limited to, liaising with Residence Manager on anticipated final guest total, special dietary requirements for efficient catering and staffing purposes, liaising with the Chef on the menu to ensure the proper table setting, and the right number of staffing.
- Responsible for any houseguests staying at the residence. This requires preparing their rooms and checking their programme with the Residence Manager for any meal requirements.
- Report technical or maintenance issues to the Technical Works Group (TWG)/ Estates Team as required. Arrange and oversee all maintenance and service requirements for the Residence.
- Responsible for all beverage purchases. Keep account of in/out movements of wines and spirits for both official and private use. Undertake monthly inventory of wine cellar.
- Keep account of silver, crystal, and chinaware. Check in/out movements before and after events. Monthly inventory, reporting anything missing or broken to Residence Manager.
- Responsible for the use of Butler/ Driver corporate credit card and expenses for the Residence.
- Use the in-house Oracle-based HR management system to record all absences for the team.
- Review all holidays, sickness, and overtime. Report to Residence Manager to ensue correct staffing levels are achieved for smooth running of the Residence.
- Responsible for all Service Standards. We aim to deliver a 5* experience for all our guests, so where improvements can be made suggestions are welcomed. These should be discussed with the Residence Manager and Ambassador prior to implementation.
This is not an exhaustive list but covers the key set of tasks and responsibilities. The jobholder may be asked to carry out other ad-hoc duties upon discussion with the line manager, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any response to a crisis. The jobholder will be expected to do all tasks within their level of skill and ability.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Previous relevant work experience in a similar role.
- Active listening and communication skills and with a good level of both spoken and written English. Able to express ideas and messages clearly.
- Ability to manage a small team. Demonstrates team working skills and able to collaborate effectively across Embassy teams.
