Job Title: Design Manager - Tunneling Expert

Join Saudi Arabian Bechtel Company (SABCO) as a Design Manager - Tunneling Expert and take on a challenging role in managing design activities and coordinating workloads related to tunneling for Water projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Manage design activities and coordinate workloads related to tunneling for Water projects.
  2. Plan, assist, manage, and monitor the review of design deliverables produced by the client's design consultant, including reports, providing feedback to the Design Project Manager regarding progress, key issues, and risk.
  3. Assist and manage the design review of the design consultant's hazard and risk logs.
  4. Assist the response to comments raised on deliverables by subject matter experts, the design review team, the Independent Checking Engineer, and Independent Safety Assessors.
  5. Ensure the buildability of the proposed design and suitability of materials.
  6. Assist engineering efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and contractors.
  7. Assist and visit the jobsite as required, to resolve problems, interpret drawings and documents, and provide technical assistance during the construction phase.
  8. Assist with Contracts Department and Construction teams for the pre-construction procurement process and the checking and assembly of the design documentation for issue as design-build or design-bid-build tender packages as required.
  9. Review Pre-Construction Design (Concept Design, Developed Design, and Detailed Design) and Feasibility Study for all tunneling work.
  10. Review contractor's construction drawings, respond to technical queries, and technical submittals to ensure compliance with design intent.
  11. Review changes or deviations in design scope, material quantities, budget, or schedule, and assist particularly with defining the change, obtaining accurate estimates of the hours involved, and recommending budget adjustments.
  12. Take an active role in design reviews, interdisciplinary design reviews, and provide comments.
  13. Perform work that involves conventional design practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  14. Provide guidance for assured design quality and compliance with the client's requirements, design guidelines, statutory requirements, local and international codes, standards, and norms, and international standards of independent firms that are carrying out the detailed design.
Requirements:
  1. A recognized degree in Civil/Geotechnical/Geology engineering from an accredited college or university, preferably post-graduate qualification with 15+ years of relevant experience in design management related to Water projects and especially WTS.
  2. Experience in managing the design/installation/operation/maintenance of WTS, Water/Wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, desalination plants, and district cooling plants from a tunneling perspective.
  3. Extensive experience in tunneling design and construction, including supervision of major infrastructure projects. The experience should include drill & blasting through strong rock and poor ground conditions.
  4. Experience in both design-build and design-bid-build forms of procurement with contractors and consultants.
  5. Experience in field construction and inspection for initial acceptance.
  6. Knowledge of relevant codes and standards pertinent to the discipline.
  7. Knowledge of geology and structural engineering.
  8. Thorough knowledge of discipline engineering techniques, the design of engineered systems, and design calculations.
  9. Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design, including appropriate knowledge of CAD (both 2-D and 3-D), e.g., AutoCAD, MS Word, and Excel for managing design reviews.
  10. Knowledge of Rocscience software for tunneling design.
  11. Understanding of the roles played by other departments on projects, including basic construction practices and the economics involved.
  12. A professional license from a recognized licensing or registration board.
  13. Excellent social, analytical, and communication skills (oral and written).
  14. Proactive, supportive, questioning, challenging, and result-driven.
  15. Ability to manage multiple assignments, changing priorities, and work with ambiguity.
